Who is Dele Alake?
Henry Dele Alake, born on October 6, 1956, is a Nigerian journalist, activist, and technocrat. He served as the commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State from 1999 to 2007, during the tenure of Governor Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Alake became actively involved in Nigerian politics as a communication advisor and trusted confidant to Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, who was the victor of the nullified June 12 presidential election in 1993. In December 2014, Dele Alake reemerged in the national political scene in Nigeria when he was appointed as the director of Media and Communication for the Buhari Campaign Organisation. His role was to support General Muhammadu Buhari, the former head of state, in his successful bid for the Nigerian presidency in the February 2015 election.

Alake received his primary education at Surulere Baptist Primary School in Lagos, attending from 1961 to 1967. Subsequently, he enrolled at Christ’s School Ado Ekiti, where he obtained the West African School Certificate. In 1974, while pursuing his Higher School Certificate at Igbobi College in Yaba, Lagos (1973-1975), he achieved the General Certificate of Education. In 1975, Alake entered the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, to pursue a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Political Science, which he completed in 1978. He later returned to the same university and earned a master’s degree in Mass Communications in 1981.

He started writing a column for the National Concord after one year of employment, which he continued to do until 1989. Later on in the year, he was appointed editor of Sunday Concord, a position he retained until 1995. Prior to that, he also contributed to the Sunday Concord. Later, he was appointed editor of the National Concord. He became editor of the National Concord later in 1995, a job he held until June 1999.
Politics Career:
In 1999, Alake was appointed as the Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State by Governor Bola Tinubu. In this role, Alake was responsible for overseeing the state’s public relations and media affairs. He also played a key role in the development of the state’s tourism industry.
