Early Life and Education
Ayra Starr grew up in the West African country of Benin, specifically in the city of Cotonou. Her parents took care of her as a child.
Both Ayra Starr’s parents and her brother, Dami Aderibigbe, hail from the Nigerian state of Edo.
She developed an early appreciation for music, and by the time she was 10, she was singing in the school chorus and co-writing songs with her only sibling.

In 2019, Ayra Starr started sharing her renditions of songs by other singers, including Andra Day and 2Face Idibia. According to her, her chosen stage name embodies her beliefs and values since “it means woke and eye-opening and that’s what I stand for.” She was featured in the music video for Eri Ife’s “Dear Future Wife.” An original song titled “Damage” was released by her in December 2019.
